Mrs. Gonsalves’ Second Grade November Newsletter

We will be celebrating Veterans Day on Monday, 11/11. We will be having our conferences on the evening of 11/14 and during the day on 11/15. There is no school for the students on 11/15 due to these conferences. We will not have school during Thanksgiving week. Please let me take this opportunity to wish all of your families and friends a very Happy Thanksgiving holiday.

Our Specials Classes will be on the following rotation:
    Monday – Art
    Tuesday – Physical Education
    Wednesday – Library
    Thursday – Physical Education
    Friday – Music
Please be sure your child brings in library books that they have checked out on Wednesdays. It is also a requirement to have sneakers on Physical Education days. Our goal in all of our Specials Classes is to consistently earn “excellent” grades for overall positive behavior. Recess and Lunch is from 12:25 - 12:55.

Homework will be sent home on Mondays through Thursdays. Please complete and return homework daily. Homework will include Math, Reading for twenty minutes and a fluency passage. Please feel free to continue sending notes in with the students when you have a question, and I will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support, Mrs. Gonsalves

Mrs. Gonsalves' Start of School Letter

    2019 – 2020 School Year

    Dear Families,

I would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 second grade class at Aggie Roberts Elementary School. My name is Mrs. Gonsalves and I will be your son/daughter’s teacher for this school year. This will be the third year I have taught at Roberts and my nineteenth year in the Clark County School District. We have an exciting year planned.
We will be spending a week of integrated instruction on each reading standard along with phonics, writing and language arts lessons. We will have reading assessments at the end of the week. Our math instruction will address the standards with the elements of operations, addition and subtraction, and progress through numbers in base ten, geometry, measurement, fractional parts and data. There will be an assessment at the end of each topic. The students will also be having instruction in health, science, technology, and social studies. Each time your child is absent the work missed will be sent home to be completed. There are three days allowed to complete and return make-up work.
The behavior plan I use in the classroom is a four-part color coded system of green, blue, yellow, and red. All students begin each day on green indicated by a clothespin with their name on it. They will move to the next color when classroom or school rules are broken. If a student goes to red on any day, you will receive a note from me. Students with serious infractions will be sent to the principal’s office. Students will also have personal positive awards when they receive Beep Beep tickets for demonstrating good behavior throughout the school.
Homework will be sent home on Mondays through Thursdays. Please complete and return homework daily. Homework will include Math, Reading for twenty minutes and a fluency passage most weeks. Please sign or initial sections of the weekly homework sheet as requested to support the learning process by monitoring your son or daughter’s homework throughout the week.
If you have any questions, please feel free to write me a note and send it in with your child. I will get back to you as soon as possible with a response. When your child has been absent or is not going home using the normal mode of transportation, a written note is also required. Pre-arranged absence paperwork must be completed in the office for absence days known in advance.
Birthday celebrations are not allowed in the classroom. If you would like to recognize your son/daughter’s birthday, individual non-food items may be sent in to be distributed to all students in the class. Your child will have to be able to distribute the item that is sent in. Birthday invitations cannot be distributed at school unless the entire class is being invited.
I look forward to working with your children as we embark on their journey through second grade.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Gonsalves

    Mrs. Gonsalves’ Classroom Procedures

    Morning Routine

Students begin entering the classroom at 8:45. Students proceed to their desks and unpack their backpacks. Then they hang their backpacks on the hooks provided starting with the back row first and put their lunch boxes into the lunch basket. Students can then read a book, finish a piece of writing or any other unfinished work that is in their desk folder until 9:00.

The first bell rings at 9:00 and attendance is taken, lunch count and any other items are accounted for.

At 9:00 the pledge, mission statement and 30 seconds of silence is communicated via the intercom and we stand. Then we listen to the school announcements for the day. The tardy bell rings at 9:05

    Lunch Routine

Students will remove their lunch boxes from the basket if they have brought lunch from home. Students will line up with cold lunch students first and hot lunch students next.

We will walk to the multi-purpose room together and when entering the room, the hot lunch students will go to the hot lunch line and the cold lunch students will go to our designated table and begin unpacking and eating their lunch.

They will be dismissed to recess when they finish eating. They will put their lunch boxes into the lunch basket and play until the bell rings. They will go to their line-up dot and enter the building with their teacher.

    Homework

Students will be having homework on Mondays through Thursdays. Homework will include Math, Reading for twenty minutes daily and a fluency passage. All homework sheets must be completed and turned in daily. There will be a parent/guardian signature line on the bottom of the fluency passage that must be initialed for the homework sheet to be considered complete. Please support the learning process by monitoring your son or daughter’s homework throughout the week.

    Make-Up Work

Each time your child is absent the work missed will be sent home to be completed. There are three days allowed to complete and return make-up work. Make-up work will not be distributed in advance.

    Communication

If you have any questions please feel free to write me a note and send it in with your child. I will get back to you as soon as possible with a response. A written note is the best way to contact me.

When your child has been absent or is not going home using the normal mode of transportation, a written note is required. Pre-arranged absence paperwork must be completed in the office for absence days known in advance.

    Birthdays

Birthday celebrations are not allowed in the classroom. Your child will have to be able to distribute the item that is sent in. Birthday invitations cannot be distributed at school unless the entire class is being invited.

    Closing Routine

The students will go to their assigned mailboxes and remove all items and bring them to their desks. Then they will proceed to the hooks and remove their backpacks and then remove their lunch boxes from the lunch basket. All items will be packed. Students will then stack their chairs and pick up any items that have dropped. Students will then be called to the dismissal line. All students will walk to the second grade area. When the bell rings students will be dismissed to the buses, walker line, safekey, Girls and Boys Club line and then parents may enter through the gate for pick-up.
